From above, the cove looks like a held breath.

Four boats rest on their lines. What reads as shadow beneath each hull is the boat itself, returned on a seafloor so clear the water has stopped pretending to be opaque. Seagrass writes in a language only the tide can read. The ropes hold. The sea shifts around them — rising, falling, rising again — and the boats stay exactly where they belong. A mouillage is a berth the water has agreed to. The French knew there needed to be a word for this.

Most will see turquoise. A few will see what the turquoise is keeping.
