I was trapped below deck — in the belly of a docked barge, no windows, pulsing club music, and the kind of pain that steals your breath. A well-intentioned dinner had gone wrong. Gluten slipped in.
I doubled over in the cramped bathroom, fists clenched on cold steel walls, the sound of laughter and bass thrumming above me like a taunt. My group was gone. The golden hour light — gone.
I missed it. I missed Paris.
But something in me rebelled. I shoved open that barge door, light stabbed into my eyes, and I ran — not because I was well, but because I couldn’t stand to surrender the shot.
I didn’t know where my kids were. I didn’t know what the sky was doing. I didn’t know if I’d make it.
But as I reached Pont Alexandre III, the world cracked open.
The clouds burned gold. The statues caught fire. And I — against every odd — was there.
